Now that the semester is in full swing, we wanted to share some upcoming opportunities:

AmeriCorps Alums Happy Hour THIS Thursday!
Need a break from SPEA? Then join us at Yogi's this Thursday at 6PM for an AmeriCorps Alums Happy Hour! Have a drink, order some food and meet other AmeriCorps alumni. In addition, we'll discuss AmeriCorps Alums' Spring semester plans to promote national service at SPEA and around the IU campus.

Indiana Governor's Conference on Service & Volunteerism
October 12th, 10AM-5:15PM/October 13th, 7:30AM-2:45PM 
The office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives (OFBCI) is hosting the Indiana Governor's Conference in Indianapolis and they are currently looking for volunteers to monitor sessions and to help with setup.  It looks like a great opportunity for networking with current OFBCI staff, other leaders of nonprofits in Indiana, and John Gomperts, the current National Director of AmeriCorps.

Meet 'n Greet with AmeriCorps Director John Gomperts
October 12th, 6-8PM
The AmeriCorps Alums-Indianapolis Chapter will be hosting a happy hour in Indy after the Indiana Governor's Conference to give AmeriCorps Alums a chance to connect with the Director of AmeriCorps, John Gomperts.  The event will be at Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. in Broad Ripple.  
LeaderCorps Mentoring Opportunity
Megan Fetter, LeaderCorps and Inclusion Coordinator for OFBCI, has reached out to see if any of you are interested in serving as mentors for the new class of LeaderCorps members. The mentors will serve as a person that can share their own AmeriCorps experiences and help the LeaderCorps members make the most of their year.  Time commitment will be completely up to you.  If you are interested, please let us know and we will share more about the opportunity as we receive final details.

START's Rally for Service
During the last week of October, START will be organizing a week full of service-oriented events - including a non-profit fundraising challenge.  Teams form to compete against each other in raising money for a non-profit of their choice.  It would be great to show our support by creating an AmeriCorps Alums team.  Please let us know if there is a non-profit you are interested in sponsoring!  More details to come.

Volunteer of the Month
Each month during the school year, START will be recognizing a student who has gone beyond the call of duty as a graduate student and volunteered in the community. This recognition is open to all SPEA students--START member or not--and we are calling for nominations for October Volunteer of the Month. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Oct. 28, so if you've seen a SPEA student who has impressed you with their volunteerism, please send your nominations to speastart@gmail.com today!

Shirley Sagawa Event Update, AmeriCorps Week Service Opportunities, Friendly Reminders

Good afternoon! 

We are getting so close to the end of the semester so I'll cut right to the chase:

Shirley Sagawa will be speaking with the Civil Society and Public Policy class at 3pm tomorrow in SPEA (PV) 169. All are welcome! 

Our deal we've negotiated for Red Cross CPR and First Aid Training is an excellent opportunity to (re)certify a marketable life-saving skill. Email Jesse at jesfreed@indiana.edu within the next 24 hours to register.

Elections! We are looking for officers for next year. If you love AmeriCorps, send us a nomination! Email Stefanie at smojonni@indiana.edu with questions about the time commitment and duties involved. 

AmeriCorps Week inconveniently falls after the semester ends, but don't let that deter you from finding an event. Here are a couple:

The Hoosier-to-Hoosier Sale is in need of volunteers! Now that it's April, they are lining up volunteers for early-summer activities. They will need some need people to help collect items from dorms and Greek houses, as well as sort through them. Please visit http://www.indiana.edu/~sustain/hoosier_to_hoosier/volunteer.html to register. It looks like there are shifts available Monday and Tuesday, May 9-10. Monday 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm. Tuesday 9am-12pm. These are collection days and they need at least a couple of people for some heavy lifting! "Think of it as helping your buddy move, if you're budy was the whole city of Bloomington!"
 
AmeriCorps Week Celebration in Indianapolis! Please see the attached flyer and MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the upcoming 2011 AmeriCorps Week Celebration event on Friday, May 20, 2011. This event will be located in Indianapolis, but all AmeriCorps members are welcome (and encouraged) to attend. This will be the 3rd Indianapolis hosted AmeriCorps Week event and we look forward to seeing you there! Again, further event details will be coming soon - stay tuned!

Elections and Upcoming Events!

Good afternoon alums!

A huge thank you to those who helped out and/or attended our panel discussion this past Tuesday! I know everyone is busy and I'm very happy we had such a good and interest in learning more about the current and future state of AmeriCorps. 

Shirley Sagawa to speak at IUB (via Skype)
One of our panelists, Dr. Les Lenkowsky, teaches a class on Civil Society and Public Policy and has included a section on AmeriCorps this semester. Shirley Sagawa, author of The American Way to Change, will be speaking to his class next Friday, April 15 at 3pm (this is a change from 1:30pm that was included in the last email) Dr. Lenkowsky has graciously opened his class to interested alums. Please RSVP by Monday if you are interested in joining that discussion. 

Elections!
Continuing students - Please don't forget to submit nominations for next year's executive team. We have been more active this year than in previous years and we hope to continue growing our support and bringing more opportunities for Alums to the Bloomington area. This is not exclusive to SPEA students! Feel free to email Stefanie, our current president, at smojonni@indiana.edu if you have any questions.

Red Cross First Aid Certification!
Don't forget that we have a special rate of $36 for Alums (discounted from $50) to be certified (or re-certified) for Red Cross First Aid/CPR. The first seven people to RSVP for the course will get a discounted rate of $25. This will be a blended course, which means you will complete a portion of the class online before attending the class. The online portion will take 1-4 hours to complete. The classroom portion will take place on April 27 from 6-10PM. Deadline for registration is April 15.  If you are interested, please respond to Jesse Freedman (jesfreed@indiana.edu) with your mailing address, phone number, and email address and we will take care of the registration.  Once your registration is confirmed you will receive an email with additional details. Also email Jesse if you have any questions!

Events today! And possible internship opportunity!

Good morning Alums!

I just want to remind you about the panel discussion AmeriCorps in Your Community: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow is this evening in Kelley School of Business Rm 219! Pizza will be available at 5:30, and the panel will begin at 6pm. 

Elections! All continuing students with AmeriCorps experience, please send in your nominations for the 2011-2012 President and Vice President! Please help us continue growing next year!

A couple of other things that might interest you: 

Global Village Living-Learning Center is currently in the process of reapplying for AmeriCorps funding. If they receive the awards again, Assistant Director Lauren Caldarera will be looking for a SPEA or School of Education masters student to work alongside the undergraduate AmeriCorps members to conduct a program evaluation of their Books & Beyond program. Please contact Lauren at lcaldare@indiana.edu for further details. If AmeriCorps funding is granted, it would be accompanied with an $1100 Education Award. 

Books & Beyond Fundraiser and Celebration
If your not too bogged down with end of the semester projects, after tonight's panel discussion, 
The Books & Beyond program mentioned above is having their final bash of the year to support literacy in Rwanda. Four bands will be playing from 8pm-1am at Max's Place (6th Street, on the north side of the square). There is no cover and Max's Place will donate 10% of total sales on beer, pizza, pasta, cookies, and cakes to the cause.

April Updates: Red Cross Training, Elections, and more!


Hey Alums,

We have a lot going on this month, so I'll get right to it.

Red Cross Training! Has your Red Cross First Aid/CPR expired?  Would you like to get certified/re-certified?  Well, we have a deal for you!  We have negotiated a special rate of $36 for Alums (discounted from $50).  Want an even better deal?  The first seven people to RSVP for the course will get a discounted rate of $25.  This will be a blended course, which means you will complete a portion of the class online before attending the class.  The online portion will take 1-4 hours to complete.  The classroom portion will take place on April 27 from 6-10PM.  We will be opening up registration until April 15.  If you are interested, please respond to Jesse Freedman (jesfreed@indiana.edu) with your mailing address, phone number, and email address and we will take care of the registration.  Once your registration is confirmed you will receive an email with additional details.

Elections! AmeriCorps Alums Bloomington is seeking a new President and Vice President to get things rolling for the 2011-2012 academic year! Nominations are now open. Please send us your name, which position you are interested in, and a brief description of your AmeriCorps experience and why you want to serve as an executive member of AAB. Nominations will close next Friday. We will then distribute the descriptions of nominees and give all members a week to vote. We know the next class will continue the momentum we have built over the past few years!

Mark your calendar! Shirley Sagawa, author of The American Way to Change, will be a guest speaker via Skype in Dr. Lenkowsky's Civil Society and Public Policy class on April 15 at 1:30. Dr. Lenkowsky has graciously opened up this class meeting to AmeriCorps alums interested in hearing from someone Steve Waldman called the "founding mother" of the modern service movement and a recipient of the Lifetime of Service Award. Location is still to be determined, but we will keep you posted on developments. 

Also, don't forget that our AmeriCorps Panel Discussion is coming up on April 5 at 6pm (with refreshments at 5:30) in Room 219 in the Kelley Business School.

Tomorrow night's City Council meeting about the impact of federal funding cuts

Good evening Alums!

Here's a press release about a City Council meeting tomorrow night. People from the public will be allowed to speak for 3 minutes each or they can submit written input. The Council is hoping for lots of speakers and hundreds of attendees. If you can pass this along to members, other programs and other supporters, that would be terrific. Current members are not allowed to be involved in lobbying as official representatives of AmeriCorps, but alums can!

Bloomington Common Council to Hold a Community "Listening Session" on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 to Hear From the Public on Pending Federal Cuts to Social Services Programming.

Bloomington, IN -- The City Council will hold a Special Session on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 to hear from the public about pending federal cuts to social services programs. The Special Session will immediately follow the Council's Committee of the Whole discussion, starting at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to reduce the
2011 federal budget by $60 billion. This includes billions of cuts to social services programs. The measure will be sent on to the Senate for consideration the week of February 28, 2011.

The cuts to social service programs include: The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, Community Health Centers, Head Start, Maternal and Child Health Block Grants, Family Planning, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services, Community Services Block Grant, HUD Community Development Fund, AmeriCorps, Legal Services and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

These reductions jeopardize a number of local programs that serve Bloomington's most vulnerable residents. "Decisions are being made in Washington, D.C., but the negative impacts of those decisions are very real and very immediate to our community," said Council President Susan Sandberg. "Pain does trickle down from the Hill and Bloomington citizens are about to get hurt."

In an effort to better understand the scope of these funding losses, the Council invites members of the community to come to the Special Session and speak to the ways in which agencies and individuals will be affected by these cuts.

Residents unable to attend this Special "Listening" Session are encouraged to give the Council their feedback via e-mail:

FoodCorps: Applications Now Open!


Applications Open: Become a FoodCorps Service Member!

FoodCorps, a new national service program designed to reverse childhood obesity while cultivating a new generation of farmers and public health leaders, is now accepting applications from potential Service Members.

FoodCorps Service Members will spend a year of paid public service building and tending school gardens, developing Farm to School programs and conducting hands-on nutrition education in communities of need.

Are you a student who cares about service and is willing to put your passion into action? Is there a student volunteer at your agency you would like to encourage to continue serving? The Student Activities Office (SAO) LEAD IU program is hosting AmeriCorps positions during the 2011-2012 academic year.  After completing 300 hours of community service and leadership training, members will receive a $1,132 Education Award. This program is graciously supported through Indiana Campus Compact.

Welcome New Executive Reps!

Good evening Alums!
Our election nominators for two open positions closed on Friday. We had two parties nominated and decided to forego a formal vote. After discussing with the nominated parties, our new First Year Representative is Chris Bentley.

My name is Chris Bentley, and I am very interested in the 1st Year Representative position for AmeriCorps Alums. When I started with AmeriCorps, I didn't know my community or the needs within it. It was largely through my opportunities in AmeriCorps that I became aware of how I could help, and through undertaking projects and volunteering at various organizations, I grew as a person. Now, I would like to give back to this organization by acting as a mentor so that everyone involved can be fully successful and experience the exhilarating feeling that comes with service!

Chris will help us with the following over the rest of the semester:
a)   Serve as liaison between 1st year SPEA students and AmeriCorps Alums
b)   Directly assist the Professional Development Coordinator with planning and implementing events
c)   Directly assist the Service Coordinator with planning and implementing events
d) Directly assist the Outreach Coordinator with AmeriCorps outreach and membership recruitment

We also had an opening for a First Year Social Chair and Lindsi Lara-Perez and Evan Davies submitted a nomination for co-representatives. They will help us this year to:
a)   Plan and organize AmeriCorps Alums social events
b)   Be responsible for sending event announcements to AmeriCorps Alums through the listserv
c)   Send announcements on the AmeriCorps Alums Facebook page
d) Send announcements on the AmeriCorps Alums blog
e)   Distribute flyers and information for social events throughout Bloomington

Lindsi and Evan are first-year MPA students who both served two years with City Year and the YMCA, respectively.  They are both excited about joining AmeriCorps Alums Bloomington and furthering the group's mission here at SPEA.

Election Update, Volunteer Opportunity and Happy Hour Reminder

Good afternoon!

I hope the first couple weeks of the semester haven't been too crazy for everyone and that you can all make it out to Yogi's from 5-7pm for our January Happy Hour. Our 1st Year Representative meeting was set to close today, but we are going to extend the deadline for one more week. Thank you to those who have already submitted statements! Our next "e-board" meeting will be Tuesday at 7pm in the SPEA grad lounge. We meet every other Tuesday at 7pm. Anyone who is interested in being a part of AmeriCorps Alums Bloomington (community members included!) but would like more information is welcome to come to that meeting. We have built a lot of momentum over the past year and would like to find a good team of 1st years to continue that into the fall 2011/spring 2012 academic year. 

Below is a local volunteer opportunity. We hope to schedule an orientation soon, but this past week was difficult to coordinate. Please respond back to this email if you are interested in having something set up at SPEA, or contact Holly directly:

Since 2005, Area 10 has been helping local senior citizens and people with disabilities stay in their homes by improving the accessibility and maintaining the safety of their houses through the REPAIRS Team. That stands for Reliable Experts Providing Accessibility, Independence, Repairs, and Safety.
Our REPAIRS Team has done everything from building ramps to changing batteries in smoke detectors. One request that our current team cannot meet is snow removal. In fact, we know of no group that offers snow removal to the public in Monroe or Owen counties. We need a large crew to call upon this winter to shovel, sweep, and salt walkways to ensure all our neighbors are safe.
You are invited to call to schedule a volunteer orientation and hear the details of how the program works. After you’ve attended orientation, you will be “on-call” after a snowstorm to shovel/sweep/salt a client’s walkway. We ask that you commit to shoveling at least twice in the winter of 2011. You may also continue to volunteer with the REPAIRS Team after winter if you choose. Anyone can volunteer, although we ask people 13 and under to volunteer with an adult. MLK Day is Monday! Are you looking for a way to get involved?

Time: 8am-1pm

Where: 827 West 14th Court

What: We will be cleaning and painting interior walls of the building in the childcare program and gym. Some volunteers may complete additional projects such as organizing the food pantry and creating bags for hungry families.

How: Make sure to wear clothes that can get paint on them! If you need a ride to the volunteer site, please meet in the parking lot behind SPEA at 7:40 am and let the event organizer know when you RSVP.
